An Update From
Friends of The Juana Briones House
Spring 2008

Dear Friend of the Juana Briones House:

Legal situation status: The date of the court hearing has been changed to June 5 at 9:00 a.m. Place, personnel, and case remain the same: On behalf of the Friends of the Juana Briones House, an unincorporated association; noted preservationist and attorney, Susan Brandt-Hawley and Leslie C. Nichols will represent the Friends of the Juana Briones House. The court hearing will be in motion at Superior Court.

Recent radio coverage: Saturday, April 5, at 1:15, Latino News and Views with Raymundo Talavera 91.5 FM, KKUP. (Program download pending.)
Clark Akatiff, Tony Cisneros, and I had about 15 minutes to present our vision of why the Juana Briones House should be in public ownership and available for people to learn from it. No place else tells as well a very significant part of the history of California and the nation. No other structure expresses such depth of personality, character, and continuity from Indian times to now. (Would that our energies were going into inviting you and the public to visit and learn from the house instead of arguing just to keep it intact.)

On KKUP program, Clark Akatiff mentioned a gathering - directly following the court hearing - in St. James Park in San Jose at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, where people dedicated to the preservation and public ownership of the Juana Briones house may joyfully enjoy mariachi music and refreshments for a positive coming together in honor of the cause.

Stanford University Special Collections:
Professor Albert Camarillo wrote that Stanford will be originating a Juana Briones Collection in the archives. People who have been paying attention to her life story and the preservation of her house in Palo Alto have collected materials about their activities and research over more than two decades that will be welcome at the library.
